Hansa Rostock
When it was founded in 1954 the club was initially called Sport Club Empor Rostock. After a modest start Rostock went on to become one of the more successful sides in the former German Democratic Republic (DDR) coming second in the DDR Oberliga three times and reached the Cup final on several occasions.
In 1964 the football section was removed from the wider sports club and was designated as a ‘focus’ club, expected to nurture talent for the national side.
The final season of East German football in the year before German reunification was Rostock’s most successful – the club won both league and cup and as a result joined Dynamo Dresden as one of two teams from the former East Germany to play in the Bundesliga in 1991/92
They were relegated after one season but returned to the top flight three years later and were to remain in the Bundesliga for another ten years. In that time the club was the only East German side to challenge the wealthier West German clubs.
Like many former East German sides Rostock has faced major problems on and off the pitch.
The club has nevertheless maintained a large, loyal and very passionate fan base ( the 7th largest in Germany). High numbers follow their club across the country to away games and the Ostseestadion regularly has the highest league attendance. Rosock fans’ belief in their club was rewarded in 2020/21 with promotion to the 2. Bundesliga.
Stadium
The Ostseestadion opened in 2001. It has a capacity of 29,000, with 20,000 seats and 9,000 standing places.
