Starting from Düsseldorf: Other things to do
Take a walk round the Altstadt.
They say it’s the longest bar in the world, with over 260 bars, cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. Many have TV screens inside and out and show games on matchdays.
Spend some time in Uerige in Rheinstrasse.
This is a famous pub which brews its own beer called Alt. They also serve traditional Düsseldorf food. You can sit down inside if you want – but there is usually a big crowd of people outside as well. You can get your drinks from a bar in the street or from waiters who come round with regular refills. While you are there, go round the corner. You will see people buying drinks from a little window beside a shop. This is Killepitsch – a local liqueur, which is said to be good for the digestion.
Take the underground (U79)to Kaiserswerth.
This quiet town is about 15 minutes from the city centre. You can take a walk along the Rhine, have coffee and cakes (Café Schuster opposite the platform, Backerei Norgel on your left in the marketplace), have a typical pub meal and a beer (Bierhaus zum Einhorn in the marketplace) or just wander around. There is a snack bar called Berliner Imbiss, on the platform which is said to do the best Bratwurst in Düsseldorf. There are also regular boats between the city centre and Kaiserswerth, so you might want to go back on the river. If you go back by underground, get out at Heinrich Heine Allee and take a walk through the Altstadt.
Take the underground (U74, U77, U75 or U76) across the river to Oberkassel.
Then walk back over the bridge so you see the city panorama. Once you are on the other side, keep walking towards the city centre. There is a row of bar/restaurants right on the riverside – you can get a decent meal there, or you might just want to take a look at what how Germans like to unwind and have a good time.
Take a sightseeing tour on the Hop-on Hop-off double-decker bus.
You can get on at the tourist information office near the station. (Come out of the station, cross the tram lines and street and turn right – it’s about 100 meters away)
Walk beside the Rhine at sunset.
Visit the Mediahafen.
This used to be the docks area but all the old warehouses have either been converted into modern flats and offices or replaced by amazing new buildings.
